The monumental complex of Forte di Bard is leading a complex project for the construction of a cultural center Western Alps. From the fortress impenetrable barrier and positioned to defend the valley, Fort Bard becomes gateway to the culture and traditions of the Alps, a museum center at the forefront internationally, mostly to the mountains.
The ambitious plan, restoration and enhancement, strongly supported by the Regione Autonoma Valle d'Aosta, saw in January 2006 the public opening of the Fort of Bard completely renovated and functionally redirected. The opening coincided with the inauguration of Alpine Museum and space for temporary exhibitions. Currently, the Forte di Bard offers visitors The first part of the many activities of the project, merging into a single structure, spaces and innovative services for the culture of high quality accommodation: an opportunity to promote cultural and artistic heritage of the Val d'Aosta and a modern Infopoint; area for schools that includes an auditorium; Two conference rooms; historic routes and thematic; a cafeteria and a shopping mall. From June 2009 opened to the public, Opera Vittorio, The Alps of Children, playful approach to mountaineering route that offers a virtual climb of Mont Blanc, going to integrate the wealth of information provided by the Museum of the Alps.
To complete the project, Fort Bard will host two other museums: The Border Museum; Strong Museum.
In accordance with the natural environment and its history, Forte starts to become so principal place of interpretation and dissemination of alpine culture, able to integrate the natural vocation of a clear international attention to the enhancement and communication of specific assets of the Valle d'Aosta.
The history of the Fort
The Fort of Bard, imposing fortress of the early nineteenth century located at the entrance of the Valle d'Aosta, is the protagonist of a long history over a thousand years. Destruction and reconstruction, alternating with passages of famous people, from Napoleon to Stendhal, Cavour, make Bard a historic site, monumental of considerable charm.
Given its strategic location, the fort was used as a fortress since Roman times. It dates back to 1034 the first fortified settlement belonged to the Viscount of Aosta Boso, che nel 1242 came under the dominion of Savoy, and in 1661 became the garrison forces of the Duchy of Savoy in Aosta Valley. The fort today

At the center of the retraining project, the ambition to make a strong interpretation center of Alpine culture – of which Alpine Museum is pride – strained by an ongoing dialogue between tradition and modernity: interpretation and the contemporary story of the Alps, with their charm and their contradictions, a built-in history and tradition of Alpine. a cultural project that combines the scientific rigor of the educational mission of the museum and the communicative power of the theme park, to understand and learn through fun and excitement. Parallel, Forte offers the visitor a port of privileged access to the assets of Valle d'Aosta and in particular the lower valley, with space Valley Arts, the information point InfoLounge and numerous initiatives related to micro-Bard Donnas- Pont Saint Martin, which is an integral part.

Alpine Museum - the center and heart of the entire program of the Fort museum, The museum is a virtual journey through time and space to explore the universe of the Alps. The twenty-nine rooms which winds its way through the guided tour blending tradition and new technologies, tell a mountain 'lived' and transformed by man, through installations of strong visual impact. The visitor has the opportunity to see the emergence and colonization of the Alps by man, the complex transformation of settlements and roads, the evolution of civilization and of the Alpine landscape. The Alps of Children - interactive display dedicated to the younger, accompanied by teachers, can engage in virtual ascent of Mont Blanc. Special Exhibitions – The ground floor of the Carlo Alberto hosts a prestigious exhibition space dedicated to exhibitions of great impact and resonance.
Spaces for music and theater – during the spring and summer, the courtyards of the fort and the impressive Piazza d'Armi turn into theaters equipped to host concerts, projections and outdoor shows. A full calendar of events all dedicated to tourists and local people full of events.
Prisons - the old prison of Fort, with walkways and courtyards, are among the most evocative glimpses of the imposing military architecture. Readjusted at the beginning of the twentieth century, are an integral part of the tour routes – by appointment only - and temporary exhibitions along with Stables.
Valley Area Culture - center of the presentation and promotion of cultural heritage and artistic Valle d'Aosta. With multimedia stations available in four languages, the tourist has the possibility to choose the most interesting of the Valle d'Aosta, castles and archaeological sites, food and wine tours and courses dedicated to local wines, wealth and environmental events related to festivals and folklore of the Region. The space is set up by the Superintendence for Cultural Heritage and Activities of the Region Valle d'Aosta.
InfoLounge – space for tourism promotion, cultural, environmental and food and wine in Valle d'Aosta. The service and promotional information is located on the first floor of the Reception, at the start of panoramic elevators. In the public can find local, in a warm and comfortable, material relating to the offering of all tourist municipalities in the Region, in terms of receptivity, Offers Leisure and Events.
Area Schools - staged at the Opera and the old powder Mortar: is a resting place and welcome all dedicated to schools, with classroom and laboratory, meetings and projections. Available to students, eight different training courses in-depth issues of Alpine Museum, the addition of an educational project aimed at the content use by persons with disabilities and people with disabilities.
Area Commercial Passage Fort – Additional Opera, is open shopping area "Passage du Fort" where you can buy works and objects of tradition, Confectionery, food and wine shops in the characteristics.
Bookshop – gadgets and exclusive merchandising of Fort Bard are available at the store located next to the Ticket.
Receptivity of the Strong and the Village of Bard
From the beginning the restoration project of the Fort was tied hand in glove with that of the Village of Bard, which is gathered at his feet. The idea of merging into a single set of spaces and innovative services for culture is also reflected in the location of accommodation, divided between the courtyards at the Fort and the village.

Restaurants and cafes Gola – also located within the Fort, Opera di Gola. It has over 90 covered more café, designed by Vico Magistretti. He is currently the only coffee shop open to the public; spaces of the restaurant are available on request, with catering service, conferences and congresses.
